What
is a residential gateway for ? |

|
The Home Gaterway is a device that acts as a hub between
the home environment and the Broadband Network. Under
the control of the Service Provider, it simplifies the
user experience when utilizing Broadband services. |
Traditionally, broadband modems (cable modems and DSL
modems) only enabled the connection of a single PC to access
the Internet via it’s USB or Ethernet interface. As
operators evolved their offerings from Internet to a single
PC to multiple PCs and then to triple play (Internet, TV and
telephony) the broadband modem also evolved. First as a
modem with multiple Ethernet interfaces and then as wireless
enabled modem / router. Requirements for communication
services necessitated the addition of telephone ports and or
a DECT base station to the modem.
The next generation of services will require a more
functional device that is simple to use and provides
excellent security and user experience is simplicity This
device we call the ‘Home Gateway’.
Requirements
The new generation of integrated and convergent
(fixed-mobile) services has created the following new
requirements for the Home Gateway:
-
Providing a remote management service for the home
gateway & the devices beyond,
-
Allowing the right device or application to connect to
the right service platform with the right service class
/ Quality of Service,
-
Acting as a proxy for those devices in the home that are
not capable to communicate over the broadband network
and thus hiding the complexities of the home network
from the broadband network and vice versa. This class of
devices includes legacy telephones and consumer
electronics.
-
Facilitating secure access to home based services and
devices from authorized friends, service providers and
families from remote locations.
-
Recognizing and potentially uniting devices capabilities
and service offerings to create a better integrated home
environment and blended services.
-
Personalizing user experience from any terminal
